Upholding the spirit of diversity that was such a huge part of the founding of Livingston College, the Asian American Cultural Center (AACC), part of the Division of Student Affairs, calls LIvingston Campus its home. Located at 49 Joyce Kilmer Avenue, the AACC was founded in 1999 with the mission of fostering “a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students at Rutgers University and community partners by providing programs and initiatives focus on issues relevant to the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) community.”
Student activism was one of the key drivers of the creation of the center, which was also supported by the Rutgers faculty and staff. The various groups came together to advocate for a space for Asian students that was severely lacking on campus. Asian Americans represent about 25% of the Rutgers New Brunswick population.
A small office was first opened in Tillet Hall in 1999 and the office then moved to its current temporary location in 2005. Dr. Tho-Thi Bossachi was the founding director of the Center in 1999, and the second director, Ji Lee, still works on campus. The AACC offers a myriad of social, cultural, and educational opportunities to contextualize, highlight, promote, and critically examine the unique histories, traditions, and cultural identities within the APIDA diaspora.
The center currently has four professional staff members, students who work as senior interns and peer mentor coordinators, and nearly 50 who are part of the work study program.
Large-scale programs such as APIDA Welcome, PAN Asian Lunar New Year, and APIDA Heritage Month Programs range from 100-500 students in attendance. The Center also advises 26 of the Asian/Asian American student organizations, several of them with memberships over 100 people.
Activities for 2023 include the first ever APIDA Graduation is Rutgers 250-year history, graduate student socials and mixers that bring together APIDA graduate students from all disciplines, an APIDA LGBTQ series and further develop intersectional programs/events to highlight underrepresented communities within the APIDA Diaspora, such as the Pacific Islander Community, Undocumented Community, Disability Movement and Rights, etc.
Last May, students of the Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American diaspora gathered at the Busch Student Center’s Multipurpose Room to celebrate their upcoming graduation and to recognize the student organizations and students who excelled academically and made significant contributions to the APIDA community and the university. This event is the APIDA Graduate and Leadership Awards, also known as the APIDA GALA. Many dressed in cultural dresses. Rutgers University president Jonathan Holloway delivered remarks via video congratulating the seniors on their graduation.
Awards were given to the student organizations and students in various categories. Also recognized were the students who participated in the AACC’s Mentor/Mentee program and the AACC’s junior and senior interns. Senior Sonia Singh also addressed the seniors as the stellar graduate speaker and the event concluded with the seniors receiving their sashes. Following the celebration, a reception was held that featured Asian cuisine and students and guests took part in a 360 degree photobooth.
At the time of printing, the team was anticipating the 2023 event.
